Ripon Rotary Sanctuary Way Walk

Acknowledgment & Explanation:
This Sanctuary Way Walk website is kindly hosted by 'Ripon Rotary Bike Ride'.

The route will follow the Sanctuary Boundary of Ripon, passing the sites of eight sanctuary markers which recorded the granting of the right of sanctuary in the tenth century.

To celebrate the centenary of Rotary International in 2005, the Rotary Clubs of Ripon created and installed replica sanctuary markers close to the original sights. The sponsored walk this year, covers ten miles starting and finishing at Ripon Cathedral (or as an alternative, five miles, finishing at the Community Link Walled Garden where refreshments will be available).

At the start of the walk you will be provided with an information and route leaflet and there will be marshals along the way. You will pass all but one sanctuary way markers along the route, with illustrated interpretation boards adding to your enjoyment.

You will pass close to the Ripon Canal Basin and then along the River Skell before it joins the River Ure for an extensive period of the walk. The second half of the walk is varied with a mixture of green footpaths and pavements.

On completion, you will have experienced a healthy, interesting and scenic walk and you will have helped many through your sponsorship of our nominated charities (Ripon City of Sanctuary, Ripon Walled Garden).
